Entomology Lab

The Biology students at Logan River Academy went the Entomology Lab at Utah State University.  Michael, a graduate student, instructed the students about insects and arachnids, and he showed them USU’s enormous collection.  The students were amazed at the displays and had a wonderful time looking at the live and dead specimens from all over the world.

Star/Constellation Chart

The Integrated Science classes at Logan River Academy have been studying astronomy.  As part of the unit, the class created a star/constellation chart.  The first step was to spray paint a large black/blue circle on a white sheet.  Each student or group of students was assigned to draw a constellation to scale.  This meant that they needed to measure it on the map and then locate the position on the painted portion of the sheet.  Once they were drawn, the constellations were accented with glow in the dark paint and glitter paint.  It was a fun and creative way for the students to learn about astronomy.

Rock & Gem Show

Science classes recently went to the AnnualCache Rock & Gem Show at Bridgerland Applied Technology College.  It was an enjoyable trip for the Logan River Academy students to learn a variety of interesting facts from the collectors and see many rocks and gems.  Many of the collectors had fossils of trilobites, fish and cephalopods (squid-like animals).  In addition, the students saw displays, polished rocks, precious gems, jewelry, ammonite shells, and “the coolest” fossilized dinosaur poop.  It was a great learning and exploring experience for the students.

Graduation

Proud parents came to town last week to witness their children’s graduation.  Riverwoods Conference Center hosted the celebration and Elements provided a light lunch before the students put on their cap and gown.  The ceremony began with a short speech from the art teacher who was chosen by the graduates.  He was followed by each of the graduates’ therapist giving their last bit of advice before they venture out into the real world.  Then the moment everyone was waiting for: the presentation of the graduates, the issuance of diplomas, and the changing of the tassels.  The students were all smiles as they tossed their caps into the air.  The parents were all smiles as they captured photos as the event unfolded and of the gatherings following the graduation ceremony.
